PIGASUS

Campaign for U.S. President In 1968, Pigasus was nominated for the U.S. presidency by the Youth International Party (Yippies).[9] The pig's name was a play on the name Pegasus, the winged horse in Greek mythology. Selected for the campaign by group members Dennis Dalrymple, Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin, candidate Pigasus was purchased from a farmer by folk-singer and fellow Yippie Phil Ochs.[10] His candidacy was announced during the massive protests leading up to and during the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.[5] The Yippies demanded that Pigasus be treated as a legitimate candidate, with U.S. Secret Service protection and White House foreign policy briefings.[11] One reason why the Yippies preferred Pigasus was that "if we can't have him in the White House, we can have him for breakfast."

SDS developed from the Student League for Industrial Democracy (SLID), the youth branch of a socialist educational organization known as the League for Industrial Democracy (LID). LID descended from the Intercollegiate Socialist Society, started in 1905. Early in 1960, the SLID changed its name into Students for a Democratic Society (SDS). The Port Huron Statement was adopted at the organization's first convention in 1962 based on an earlier draft by staff member Tom Hayden.
